Det Internasjonale Valutafondet (IMF) anslo ved utgangen av 2019 en vekst i den spanske økonomien på mellom 1,6 og 2,0 prosent. I dag mener IMF at Spania står overfor et enormt fall i bruttonasjonalproduktet tilsvarende åtte prosent. Det er den største nedgangen siden den spanske borgerkrigen på 1930-tallet. Det store fallet i produksjonen vil selvfølgelig også påvirke den spanske arbeidsledigheten. Det Internasjonale Valutafondet forventer at arbeidsledigheten vil stige til 20,8 prosent ved utgangen av året, mot dagens ledighet på ca. 13 prosent. Hvis prognosen stemmer, vil det være den høyeste arbeidsledigheten siden toppen av finanskrisen i 2010. Men IMF anslår at Spania igjen vil ha god vekst fra 2021.
