Det er bare det første skrittet – men det største. Spania og Storbritannia har inngått en forhåndsavtale om å helt eliminere grensen mellom Spania og Gibraltar. Nøkkelen til den nye avtalen ligger i at Gibraltar blir opptatt i Schengen-avtalen på lik fot med Norge, Sveits, Island, Liechtenstein og de øvrige EU-landene. Dermed sikres fri mobilitet til og fra klippeøyen. Nyheten mottas naturligvis med begeistring fra alle i transportbransjen, samt de rundt 10.000 folkene som daglig krysser grensen for å gå på jobb – enten på Gibraltar eller i Cádiz-provinsen. Avtalen betyr i praksis at den nåværende grensekontrollen fjernes helt og flyplassens landingsbane blir den nye ‘usynlige’ grensen som kan passeres uten å måtte vise pass.
Det vil ta cirka et halvt år å gjøre Gibraltar til fullbyrdet medlem av Schengen-avtalen, og i første omgang skjer det i en prøveperiode på fire år.
